Scrying is basically just a word to describe seeing psychically for divination purposes. One may do this via many possible mediums.
Scrying mirrors are a very common way to receive images, as they are easy to make for oneself t home and many beautiful ones can be bought online.
This divination practice is one of the most widely accepted, spanning time, geography, and beliefs. To this day people still practice such rituals as looking into a mirror in a dark room on Halloween to see the face of a future spouse.
Creating (or purchasing if your not crafty) your own special mirror to use for scrying, will enable you to develop the practice into something that you can perform daily with this object and this object alone (as opposed to using the same mirror you use to brush your teeth) allowing you to create an energy bond with the object, infusing it with your energy and increasing the likelihood you will be able to see images in it's surface.
A gypsy hovering over a crystal ball in a dimly lit room or carnival tent, is one of the most common visions a person thinks about when the word divination is mentioned.
The use of crystals in divination can be seen as far back in time as the Druids of early Britain. Crystal balls themselves are popular as the crystal part of them is considered to heighten an individual’s psychic awareness while the ball allows for an easy way to look for answers without having to learn complicated methods or techniques.
For someone just beginning to learn the art of divination or more specifically - scrying, (which is when images given are interpreted for meaningful information), crystal balls are quite useful.
It is best to pick out your crystal ball in person though, as opposed to using one given as a gift, or previously used by another practioner, as a working crystal is a very personal object.
Some people prefer crystals without any imperfections to ensure what they are seeing is not an imperfection in the crystal itself.
While others think no coloring or clouding means it is lifeless (I personally don't find this to be true however each to their own).
If a particular crystal does not feel significant in your heart or spirit - that is you don't feel and instant 'connection' to it, it is probably not the right one for you.
To use your crystal for scrying begin your Meditation while holding your crystal ball in a calm, quiet setting before looking for images. Then record what you see, often interpretation of the images will come later as you study what you have written. For others the images will instantly impart their meaning
Dowsing rods are used for a specific type of divination, finding things or places, more so than forecasting the future or seeing future events.
The most common types of dowsing rods are used to find metal or ore deposits, gemstones, oil, ground water, or even grave sites.
A dowsing rod itself is a L-shaped or Y-shaped twig or rod.
The traditional dowsing rod is a Y-shaped branch is plucked fresh from special trees such as hazel, witch-hazel, or willow. This rod is this held by the user who walks around a target area, awaiting a dip, incline, or twitch in the branch when the item for which the person is searching is just beneath them.
I Ching Divination is a very old Chinese method for predicting the future. It first arose as a way for the sages of ancient China to provide divinely informed consultation to the wealthy and nobles. The earliest evidence of this practice comes from roughly 2700BC. The fact that it has survived this long gives credit to its usefulness in seeing into the time yet to come.
There are actually two different I Ching methods, each using a different tool;
Lithomancy, reading the future via analyzing the way a specific set of stones or gemstones arranges themselves when dropped
It is one of the oldest forms of divination. Countless cultures throughout history have been known to use it. It is so ancient that its definite origins have been lost to time, leaving historians clueless as to how it began, how the original technique was conducted, or how it evolved into the many methods we see today.
Numerous ways to perform and interpret lithomancy exist, but they all need specific stones just for the act. Traditional sets in the most popular way include thirteen stones with six for major topics asked about by diviners (new, luck, magic, health, life, love) and seven for the primary signs of ancient astrology (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn).
Newer sets often like to include extra stones for the rest of the planets in our solar system.
Muscle testing is a very old method used primarily by shamans and healers during diagnosis, to ask the body what it knows.
If you're a head person, you may find it strange to think that the body knows something your head doesn't. But the body has an amazing ability to know what is true for it and what isn't true for it.
The muscles show a truth by getting stronger, and show an untruth by getting weaker. Muscle testing is testing that stronger/weaker factor in any given situation.
The most common modern form of muscle testing that people are aware of is Kinesiology
Two Handed Muscle Testing Method
(It's safer to be able to muscle test with one hand - then if you are driving you can muscle test, while keeping the other hand on the steering wheel!)
Ouija Boards (also known as spirit boards and talking boards) have been seen in numerous cultures throughout the ages, including 1100BC in China and 540BC in Greece. Even though it has these historic starts, the late nineteenth century and the whole of the twentieth century big business, tried to turn it into a toy to be used by children at slumber parties (thank goodness it didn't catch on too well!)
The rise in the uses of a spirit board to seek out unknown answers and predictions on the future has been taking place with the increased interest in the paranormal and supernatural as well as the increase in practitioner of the Occult in all it's forms.
The board itself consists simply of a standard alphabet and the numbers zero through nine with several boards including several quick phrases such as “yes,” “no,” and “farewell.”
Instructions included with many spirit boards state that; the user simply has to have one of these boards and its accompanying planchette (the piece on which your finger rests) to communicate with beings of the spirit world.
Whilst these boards have been marketed as a toy, they can in fact be a very powerful tool to access the Otherworld in the right hands!. However, experienced practitioners of the Occult, understand that the inexperienced need to be advised, NOT to 'play' with these boards.
In the hands of the inexperienced they can become a doorway which is opened and not closes allowing all forms of spiritual entities to utilize this 'doorway', possession has been known to occur by drawing in a negative (or earth bound) entity, should appropriate protection not have been taken.
A Pendulum, is simply a balanced weight at the end of a length or cord or chain.
While most people think a pendulum is simply used to moderate the seconds in a grandfather clock, the act of using a weight suspended at the end of a chain to point out simple answers on a flat mat or piece of paper has been around for much longer.
Many times the end of the chain is connected to some type of hook or handle to keep a person’s subconscious from influencing the answer pointed to by the pendant, (crystal, or some other simple weight) located at the opposite end of the chain that hovers over what many refer to as a pendulum circle.
This is a a circle with yes, no, and maybe written around its edges.
Pendulums appear to work best with specific forms of questions (those which require a specific response) since their answers can only be a simple, yes no or maybe. Experienced practitioners can receive more complex answers after developing answer/response results with their pendulum, however for the novice, response specific questions are the easiest way to go..
If you have correctly prepped your pendulum, you store your pendulum correctly and no one else handles it you should only need to purify it every few months. However if others are using the pendulum, or you leave it out sitting on a shelf (or even on your Altar) you may wish to purify it each time before using. Dipping your weight (the pendulum itself) of choice in salt water or wafting the smoke of burning sage all around your pendulum are two of methods of purification.
Runes began as a writing system for Germanic languages before the adoption of the Latin alphabet.
However early evidence suggests that they were utilized for magickal purposes, in addition to their practical writing uses, from an early stage. Particularly in medieval times when “victory runes” were carved into swords either in the blade or hilt.
Runes are relatively new to the uses of divination magick, having only been used this way since the beginning of the twentieth century.
The runes (which are actually the written figures themselves NOT the blanks on which they are carved or printed) are printed, drawn, or engraved individually onto tiles, also known as blanks.
Wood is the preferred medium of the tiles since it comes from the living spirits of trees and is associated with the mythology of their creation.
The runes are then drawn from a pouch and laid out to resemble the technique of tarot, or they can be tossed into the air and allowed to freely land like I Ching coins.
As with most divination tools, where possible Pagans prefer to make their own rune sets as it leads to more accurate results.
Tarot Cards are most likely one of the most well-known divination tools used today, they are extremely popular for the budding psychics of the modern age.
They began as a simple card game in medieval Europe, (some suggest the exact origin was France).
However, during the eighteenth century, these cards transitioned into a way to foretell the future, by those skilled enough to know the meanings written in the cards. While the cards and their meanings seem complicated at first, most 'beginner’s decks' generally come with a small book with a basic introduction to the cards and their spreads.
These books will not only tell you some of the methods to arrange cards to ask a question, but will also tell you the basic and commonly accepted meaning of each card, which is of vital importance when learning how to use the cards for predicting the future (I have a preferred method for learning the cards, and advise my students to throw away the booklet and work with the cards, themselves - however for the novice this is one way to start)
Many decks have been developed since tarot has been used for divination, some moving away from the traditional images and meanings and devloping into more personalised practices.
Unless you will be learning an alternative method of reading your card (such as my students) and you know how to properly use a set of tarot cards, you might want to stay with a standard that is composed of the traditional seventy-eight cards, at the early stages to enable you to learn to read them according to the traditional meanings and methods.
The act of drinking a cup of unstrained tea then reading symbols, shapes, or images shown in the remaining dregs, in relation to their position in the cup, is a widely known practice of divination. The same process can even be used to read coffee grounds or wine sediment using the same techniques.
A simple tea cup and tea leaves can provide a person a way to divine the future without any difficult techniques, tools or expensive costs (such as the price of some tarot decks).
However, the images are symbolic; meaning that a working knowledge of standard symbolism is very helpful.
Also, specialized fortune teller cups have been created that have interior images in the cup to help with the divining with tea leaves. The most three common types of these specialized cups are playing card cups, zodiac cups, and individualized symbol cups.
A coin is a great simple divination tool that costs only as much as the coins value.
The coin toss is generally used when you are making a choice between two different elements. You know the pros and cons of each and you just can't make up your mind.
To use the coin toss correctly - Pick up a coin and make, heads for one choice and tails for the other.
As you toss the coin in the air, take notice which one you're hoping it will be, and yes no matter what there will be one side or another you WILL lean towards. Is it ...heads or tails?
Or you may also notice that just after you see which it is - your immediate response is "Darn I wish it had been the other one." (or it might be 'Woo Hoo")
Either way, the actual divination is in that answer - it is your responses to need to pay attention to (versus the coin answer which just frees your mind to allow it to reveal the real response).
