Air is the unpredictable realm of the mind, characterised by the phrase “Winds of change’, Study, Writing, Electronics, The Astral realm, Music, Sound, Weather Magick, Power Raising, Spells, Memory, Tests, Intellect, Divination, Phychic Powers, Travel, Knowlege, Abstract thought, Learning, Theory, Imagination, Ideas, Beliefs, Beginnings, Birth, Rebirth.

The Element of Air represents the mental realm, the domain of the intellect, ideas, communication and judgement or discernment. Its corresponding colour is yellow. Its corresponding symbol is the  sword, which is the suit in the Tarot deck to which it corresponds. Swords cut in both directions.  They symbolize the intellectual faculty of discrimination and discernment.

Air Energy is not as overpowering as other energies, which is fortunate because it is so abundant. It can be found all around us, in the Air we breathe and the wind blowing through the trees. Air Energy is light and can feel almost any temperature when it is being worked with.

It is most  powerful during the fury of a storm. Lightning charges the Air and the wind moves incredibly fast. Air Energy does not have as much physical power as Earth or Fire Energy, but it has great advantages nonetheless. It is the Energy of intellect, wisdom, and understanding. It also supports communication and friendship.

Air and the Zodiac:

Air and the Zodiac:

The symbolism of Air takes on three distinctive forms in the three Air signs which belong to this Element; Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius.

Gemini is the first Air sign encountered in the Zodiac. It represents Mutable (or "changeable") Air. It is associated with education, as are all 4 of the Mutable signs. Gemini represents early education, and also childhood.  It must be flexible and able to adapt new ideas in order to develop the higher mental faculties necessitated in its opposite sign, Sagitarius, which rules higher education, philosophy, law and religion. Gemini is especially concerned with the collection and dissemination of information. Since it is represented by the messenger (Hermes), communication, especially verbal, is a central theme of Gemini. Geminis are well-known to be quite social and often eloquent in speech, if somewhat loquacious as well.

Libra is the second and Cardinal Air sign of the Zodiac. Cardinal signs are dynamic, leaders, initiators and movers and shakers. Libra also has the unique distinction of being the only inanimate sign in the Zodiac, since the symbols are the scales. The reason for this is the association of Libra with balance and harmony.  Libra is the intellect expressed actively through the arts, through music and all things aesthetic. Libra also represents the mental weighing of two opposing views, and they are well-known for their ability to debate both sides of any issue, equally aware of  each side.  The scales of justice are one example of the use of Libra's ability to blindly weigh the facts or evidence and come to a conclusion. In this same sense of duality, Libra is also associated with relationships of all kinds, partnerships and alliances.

Aquarius is the third and Fixed Air sign of the Zodiac. Fixed signs are excellent at keeping something going which was begun by someone else, probably a Cardinal sign. Mutable signs bring things to closure. Fixed signs, unlike Mutables, are not inclined to change or adapt. Instead, they are very stubborn and willful in the area ruled by the Element involved; in this case, it is mental obstinacy. Ruled by the unorthodox Uranus, Aquarius has a reputation of being quirky and eccentric, often appearing to come out of left field, though often brilliant and inventive as well. However, Fixed signs also represent the peak of development for that Element. The future-thinking Aquarius intellect is always progressive and unorthodox in some way, placing less value on the     conventions of society than any of the other signs. Here we have those who dare to think  differently, march to a different beat, and strike out where angels fear to tread, intellectually.

It is also the domain of the Higher Mind. With its Water and Air dual symbolism as the "Water-bearer" (a cloud), it represents the blending of intellect with emotion to create a more compassionate and less dispassionate view towards others. This ability is further developed in Pisces, the next (and last) sign.

Air Spells

Before Flight.

You who would dare, to journey by air,
Must first be freed from folly and pride,
In sunlight stand, and pass your hand,
Near to the gleam of candle flame,
Kindle a feather, within it’s fire,
When it is black, smother the wick,
Gather soft wax, and fill the cracks,
Under your nails, then say this spell -
Too near to the sun, I may not fly,
Scorched I should run from his mocking eye,
Yet far from his scorn, below his sway,
Let me be borne and spared this day.
