1. Bridal Procession
(Music - "Beautiful In My Eyes" - Joshua Kadison)
(* Dane walks up to collect Kelly)
2. Introduction :
Celebrant: Kelly and Rob have invited us here today to share in the celebration of their marriage. They ask for your blessing, encouragement, and life long support for their decision to become husband, wife and family.
We come together not to mark the start of a relationship, but to recognize a bond that already exists. This wedding is a rite of passage, a celebration, and a public recognition. It is a time for tying a knot in the rope of your lives and saying, "we will not slip backwards from here, but will go forward together". It is a time for one thing of which Kelly and Rob are certain - their love for one another and their desire for that love to last forever. Witness and rejoice with us in this moment, as their love is celebrated.
3. Reading - From "The Irrational Season" by Madeleine L'Engle
"Ultimately there comes a moment when a decision must be made. Ultimately two people who love each other must ask themselves how much they hope for as their love grows and deepens, and how much risk they are willing to take…It is indeed a fearful gamble…Because it is the nature of love to create, a marriage itself is something which has to be created, so that, together we become a new creature.
To marry is the biggest risk in human relations that a person can take…If we commit ourselves to one person for life this is not, as many people think, a rejection of freedom; rather it demands the courage to move into all the risks of freedom, and the risk of love which is permanent; into that love which is not possession, but participation…It takes a lifetime to learn another person…When love is not possession, but participation, then it is part of that co-creation which is our human calling, and which implies such risk that it is often rejected".
Celebrant: I am authorised by law to solemnise marriages according to laws of Australia. Before you are joined in marriage in my presence and in the presence of these witnesses, I am bound to remind you publicly of the solemn and binding nature of the relationship into which you are now about to enter. Marriage, according to law in Australia, is the union of a man and a woman, to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life.
5. Presentation of the Bride
Celebrant: Who presents this woman to be wed to this man?
Dane: As Kelly's Eldest Son, I, Dane, on behalf of our family, present the Bride to her Groom.
6. The Asking
Celebrant: Tying the knot did not start out being an abstract term; the lovers' knot that binds two hands together represents an unbreakable union, and the tying of a knot is still practiced in various ways by different peoples as a symbol of love, affection, faith, friendship, and duty.
Rob, I have not the right to bind you to Kelly, only you have this right. If it be your wish, say so at this time and place your cord around her wrist.
Rob: It is my wish. (*Rob ties cord in a knot to Kelly’s left wrist)
Celebrant: Kelly, I have not the right to bind you to Rob only you have this right. If it be your wish, say so at this time and place your cord around his wrist.
Kelly: It is my wish. (*Kelly ties cord/ribbon in a knot to Rob’s left wrist)
Rob: I, Robert by the life that courses within my blood and the love that resides within my heart, take thee Kelly-Ann Bradshaw to my hand, my heart, and my spirit, to be my chosen one. To desire thee and be desired by thee, to possess thee, and be possessed by thee, without sin or shame, for naught can exist in the purity of my love for thee. I promise to love thee wholly and completely without restraint, in sickness and in health, in plenty and in poverty, in life and beyond, where we shall meet, remember, and love again. I shall not seek to change thee in any way. I shall respect thee, thy beliefs, thy people, and thy ways as I respect myself. I call upon the people here present to witness that I Robert take you Kelly to be my lawful wedded wife.
Kelly: I Kelly by the life that courses within my blood, and the love that resides within my heart, take thee, Robert John Bray to my hand, my heart, and my spirit to be my chosen one. To desire and be desired by thee, to possess thee, and be possessed by thee, without sin or shame, for naught can exist in the purity of my love for thee. I call upon the people here present to witness that I Kelly take you Robert be my lawful wedded husband.
8. Exchange of ring/s
Celebrant: The circle of the ring speaks of the continual nature of love for it has no beginning and it has no end. May this circle of love declare your unity and oneness of your life together. And may these rings represent a love glowing with increasing luster through the years before you.
Rob: Kelly, This ring I give you, it is my personal gift, my eternal promise of love and trust, and pride that you are my wife.
Kelly: Rob, I accept your gift of this ring. I will wear it with love and pride all my life. It will show the world that I am yours and you are mine.
Kelly: Rob, This ring I give you, it is my personal gift, my eternal promise of love, trust, and pride that you are my husband.
Rob: Kelly, I accept your gift of this ring. I will wear it with love and pride all my life. It will show the world that I am yours and you are mine.
Celebrant: Kelly and Rob, please hold your left hands together. The knot of destiny, will now be tied in the name of Love. (*Celebrant ties hands). With this cord, I bind you to the vows that you each have made. As your hands are bound together now, so your lives and spirits are joined in a union of joy, love, trust, and mutual support.
This bond I draw between you: "That though you are parted in mind or in body, there will be a call in the core of you, one to the other, to which no one else will answer. By the secrets of earth and water this is bond woven and unbreakable, irrevocable; by the law that created fire and wind this call is set within you, in life and beyond life. As this bond is a symbol of your union so may you store deep within your hearts the memory of your binding.
These knotted cords, which like their love, hold them together,-
Yet gentle are the bonds of this union;
Pull one way and the bonds are strengthened; Pull the other and they are loosened.
There are many changes that will come to pass And many challenges that must be met.
There are Rites of Passage that still lie ahead. But never again, need you face them alone.
Thus your hands are fastened; and the work of joy is done and just begun!
With this binding I tie you, hand to hand and heart to heart, together as one. Kelly and Robert, together repeat after me (* Kelly and Rob repeat after Robin) …Hand to Hand, ...Heart to Heart…Soul to Soul…Body to Body…forever and always… so mote it be! With this knot you are joined in sacred union. May the Gods smile upon you, and bless you with love, happiness, peace, health, and prosperity.
9. Reading - excerpt from “The Art of a Good Marriage”, by Wilferd Arlan Peterson
"A good marriage must be created.
In marriage the "little" things are the big things.
It is never being too old to hold hands.
It is remembering to say, ”I love you" at least once a day.
It is never going to sleep angry.
It is having a mutual sense of values, and common objectives.
It is standing together and facing the world.
It is forming a circle that gathers in the whole family.
It is speaking words of appreciation, and demonstrating gratitude in thoughtful ways.
It is having the capacity to forgive and forget.
It is giving each other an atmosphere in which each can grow.
It is a common search for the good and the beautiful.
It is not only marrying the right person -- it is being the right partner."
10. Declaration of Marriage
Celebrant: We recognize with full awareness that only a couple can truly administer the sacrament of marriage to each other, and only a couple can sanctify it, only two hearts can declare it, and only two souls can make it real. And, you, Kelly, and you, Rob, have announced the truths that were already written in your hearts, and have witnessed the same in the presence of these, your family and friends, and the Living Spirits.
Family and Friends, Kelly and Rob have declared before us all that they will live together in marriage. They have symbolised this by holding and binding hands, making promises and exchanging rings. So therefore on your behalf, and on behalf of the community, I now delcare Rob and Kelly to be Husband and Wife.
Rob you may now kiss your Bride
And now I challenge you to untie the Lover's Knot, for as in all life's challenges, one must find the Center, for therein lies the answers…."Seek thee first and ye shall find"… (*Kelly and Rob untie the knot) This cord in now untied, but you are not unbound from each other. May your union flourish and succeed. May you be one forever. (*cords are placed into bag for safe keeping)
12. The signing of the marriage certificate, and register
(Music -"Always" - Bon Jovi)
13. Presentation of the certificate to the couple
(*The celebrant presents the couple with their marriage certificate).
Celebrant: It gives me great pleasure to formally present Kelly and Rob with their Marriage Certificate and to wish them every happiness in their future life together.
Celebrant: Let us now join in a Blessing…Spirits of Love and Life, out of this whole world, two souls have found each other. Their destinies shall now be woven into one design, and their perils and their joys shall not be known apart. Kelly and Rob, may your home be a place of happiness for all who enter it; a place where the old and the young are renewed in each other's company, a place for growing and a place for sharing, a place for music and a place for laughter, a place for blessings and a place for love. May those who are nearest to you be constantly enriched by the beauty and the bounty of your love for one another, may your work be a joy of your life that serves the world, and my your days be good and long upon the Earth.
